The Borderline Relationship

More than twenty million people suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder and countless more suffer from borderline traits. In addition, partners of those suffering from BPD are very likely to seek therapy in their attempts to understand their relationship. The borderline relationship is especially problematic, primarily due to the dual problems of fear of abandonment and fear of engulfment most BPD's experience.

In this seminar we will examine the borderline relationship from the perspectives of both the BPD and their partner. In the first half of the seminar, Beverly will present information based on her new book, Loving Him Without Losing You. We will focus on the relationship through the eyes of the BPD, including their expectations of the relationship and their partner, their sensitivity to rejection, their inability to maintain object constancy and their splitting behavior.

In the second half of the workshop, Randi Kreger, the co-author of Stop Walking on Eggshells and the partner of a borderline for 18 years, will explore the borderline relationship from the perspective of the partner. Since many suffering from BPD are high functioning and their problems tend to manifest primarily in the confines of an intimate relationship, many partners are unaware of the fact that their partner suffers from the disorder, causing them to blame themselves for the problems in the relationship or to remain in a constant state of confusion.

The question then arises - should a therapist divulge the fact that someone's partner may have BPD? We will address this issue and you will gain a deeper understanding of BPD, not just on an intellectual level but on an emotional one, and learn new skills for managing BPD in your clinical work.

Presenter: Randi Kreger is the co-author of the highly respected Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking your life back when someone you care about has borderline personality disorder, the first book to address the problems of partners of borderlines. Unable to find sufficient information about the effects of BPD behavior on non-borderlines, she began researching the issue on the Internet, eventually collecting more than a thousand stories detailing the devastating effects of the disorder. Kreger moderates two e-mail discussion groups for non-BPDs and maintains a comprehensive website about BPD (http://www.bpdcentral.com/).
