My Recovery from BPD -  Review

Review by Rita Closson, M.A.. on May 2002.

This book was honest and very moving...her painful tale is engrossing.

Admitting to one's own faults and exposing mental problems is not an easy thing to do, yet Rachel Reiland does so in a frank and forthright manner.  She doesn't gloss over her problems but admits them albeit with a lot of acting out and denial at first.  Rachel may have been mentally ill and totally out of control, especially verbally, psychologically and emotionally with her psychiatrist, but her therapist worked with her unconditionally, patiently, and kindly and understood her (even though that wasn't always possible).

This is the first book I have found with a first-hand account of the borderline's feelings from the inside and her side of the story.  While it is emotionally intense in places it is necessary to see how she felt.  The author, Rachel Reiland, because she lived with Borderline Personality Disorder, can provide a side never seen by endless books written by clinicians, non-borderlines and family members who live with them.

All in all, I am ultimately convinced that this is a fascinating and ultimately enjoyable book; engaging and thought provoking.

It makes me hopeful to read that Rachel has found happiness and has been able to control her rages and borderline behaviors and move on.  Mainly it is hopeful to see that she sees that she was hurting others and has stopped these destructive behaviors.

A great read, I highly recommend it.
